Brixham Battery

Perched on the cliffs above Brixham, this Victorian-era fortification tells the story of Britain's 19th-century coastal defences. The battery was built to protect the harbour from invasion - a genuine concern in the 1800s - and the gun emplacements and barracks remain remarkably intact. You can walk around the site, peer into the restored buildings, and get a proper sense of what life was like for the soldiers stationed here during peacetime.

It's a straightforward museum experience rather than a spectacular attraction. History enthusiasts will find plenty to engage with - the weapons, the living quarters, the defensive strategy. Kids might spend 45 minutes here before restlessness kicks in, unless they're genuinely into Victorian military history. The views across Torbay are decent enough, though you're not arriving for those alone.

Brixham itself is the real draw - a working fishing port with actual character, proper fish and chip shops, and a decent seafront. If you're staying at South Bay Holiday Park or Waterside Holiday Park, both just down the road, the battery makes a logical morning outing before heading into town for lunch. Hoburne Devon Bay is also within easy reach for a more family-oriented break. Admission details and opening hours vary, so ring ahead before visiting. Allow a couple of hours maximum if you're combining it with Brixham's other attractions. It's worth the detour if you're in the area, but don't plan a holiday around it.
