Old Hall Wood

You'll find yourself under a proper cathedral of ancient oaks and beeches the moment you step into Old Hall Wood. The canopy is dense enough that even on a bright day you're walking in half-light, which sounds gloomy but honestly feels rather magical. Paths wind through without much in the way of signposting, so you need to pay attention - that's part of the appeal though, wandering rather than rushing.

It's the kind of woodland that rewards a slow pace. Moss clings to everything, the ground is soft underfoot, and you'll spot birds you don't see in managed parks. Families with younger kids might struggle a bit - the paths aren't manicured and there are plenty of roots to trip over. But older children and serious walkers will find it absorbing. I'd allow a good couple of hours if you want to do it properly rather than barrel through.

The wood sits very near Burhope Farm Campsite, which makes it ideal if you're basing yourself in the Herefordshire area for a few days. It's the sort of place that feels genuinely separate from the surrounding countryside - step out and you're back in farmland, step in and you could be miles from anywhere. No facilities I'm aware of, so bring water and don't rely on phone signal being strong.

Worth the detour if you're into woodland walks and don't mind a bit of navigation. Skip it if you want easy paths and obvious attractions.
