Old Castle

The ruins of Old Castle sit on a rise overlooking the Argyll landscape, not far from Oban - the sort of place you stumble upon while exploring the backroads rather than a major draw in itself. What remains is modest: crumbling stone walls that hint at defensive structures, weathered enough that you're reconstructing the layout as much as observing it. The setting matters more than the structure. You get decent views across the surrounding terrain, which makes it worth stopping if you're walking in the area, but you won't spend hours here.

History enthusiasts will find it more rewarding than casual visitors. The fragmented state of the ruins means you need some archaeological patience - or imagination - to picture what stood here. It's the sort of site that rewards a quick Google beforehand so you know what you're looking at.

There's no visitor centre, no admission charge that I'm aware of, and no real facilities. Allow thirty minutes maximum, including the walk to the site. Go when the light's decent - late afternoon suits the stonework better than midday glare.

If you're based at Oban Holiday Park, just down the road, Old Castle makes a pleasant diversion on a walk, but don't build a day around it. Combine it with exploring Oban's actual attractions or heading further into Argyll proper. It's genuinely free exploration, which counts for something, but manage expectations accordingly.
