Ogof Cnwc Price's Old Dig

The entrance is easy to miss if you're not paying attention - just a rough hole in the hillside above Crickhowell, marked by loose stone and a bit of scrambling. Ogof Cnwc is one of those proper caving experiences that rewards curiosity but doesn't hand you everything on a plate.

This isn't a show cave with electric lights and paved paths. It's a working dig site where serious cavers have been exploring and mapping the system for decades. The cave itself is modest in scale - you won't find cathedral chambers or underground lakes - but there's something genuinely compelling about squeezing into passages that were only discovered relatively recently. The geology tells the story if you know how to read it: limestone formations, flowstone, and evidence of the water that carved it all out.

You'll need to be comfortable in tight spaces and reasonably fit. Bring a torch and wear clothes you don't mind getting muddy. Most people allow an hour or so, though you could easily spend longer if you're into the technical side. Check locally before heading out - access arrangements can change depending on ongoing conservation work.

It's the kind of thing that appeals most to families with older kids who actually fancy getting their hands dirty, or walkers who want something beyond the obvious trail. Crickhowell itself is lovely for a base, and Cwmdu Campsite just up the road makes for a proper outdoor weekend. The cave is free, but respect it - these spaces are fragile.
