The boat leaves Oban pier right on schedule, and within minutes you're out on the Firth of Lorn with nothing but open water ahead. Oban Sea Tours runs various trips depending on the season - some head out to Mull and Iona, others focus on spotting wildlife around the islands, and there are shorter coastal cruises if you're short on time or prone to seasickness.

What you actually see depends entirely on the weather and which trip you book. On a clear day the views back towards Ben Cruachan are stunning. Seals pop up regularly, and if you're lucky, white-tailed eagles. The boat itself is comfortable enough, though it does get choppy when the wind picks up - pack seasickness tablets if you're even slightly vulnerable.

Families with older kids (say, eight upwards) tend to enjoy this most. Younger children can get restless on longer sailings, and toddlers won't appreciate being stuck on a boat for four hours. It's also ideal for serious birdwatchers and anyone who wants to see the Scottish islands without the commitment of a ferry crossing.

If you're staying at Oban Holiday Park or any of the other parks nearby - Tanunda Pods and Maggie's Cabin are closest to town - book ahead, especially in summer. Prices vary by trip length, but expect to pay a fair bit for the longer excursions. Morning departures are generally calmer seas-wise. Allow at least three hours for anything beyond the immediate coastal circuit.

Worth doing once. Don't expect a cosy wee cruise - it's proper maritime, with wind in your face and the real Scottish coast.
