Oakly Park

Walk into Oakly Park and you're immediately surrounded by proper woodland - the kind that makes you forget Ludlow's only a few miles away. This nature reserve sprawls across enough ground to keep you occupied for a good couple of hours, depending on how seriously you take the birdwatching and how often you stop to check the trees.

The park is best suited to walkers who actually want to see something - whether that's woodland birds, native plants, or just the chance to breathe air that doesn't taste of car fumes. It's not a manicured stroll; expect uneven paths and sections that get properly muddy after rain. Families with older kids will find plenty to explore, though younger children might lose interest after the first half-hour unless you're pointing out every robin.

The main draw here is the quiet. There's no café, no gift shop, no staged Instagram moments. Just woodland doing what woodland does. That's either brilliant or disappointing depending on what you came for.

If you're camped at Monstay Farm or Ludlow Touring just down the road, Oakly Park makes a solid morning or afternoon excursion. Pair it with a walk around Ludlow itself - the town's got character and decent pubs - and you've got a proper day sorted. Spring and early autumn are the times to visit, when the woodland's either bursting with new growth or showing its colours without being too dense to see through.

Allow two to three hours. Bring binoculars if you're keen on birds. Check conditions before you go - it can be boggy.
