Oaken Wood

Walking into Oaken Wood feels like stepping back about fifty years - it's proper woodland, the kind with actual fallen logs and dense canopy rather than manicured paths and interpretive boards. Located just outside Maidstone, this forest is a genuine escape if you're staying at River View Camping or any of the nearby sites, though it won't take long to realise why it barely registers on most tourist maps.

The main appeal is straightforward: you get woodland walks through native trees, decent shade, and the occasional clearing where light filters through. There's a sense of wildness to it, which is refreshing compared to managed country estates. Bring kids who'll genuinely enjoy scrambling over logs and exploring - they'll be occupied for a good hour or two. Walkers after something low-key will appreciate it, though there's nothing dramatic here - no viewpoints, no historic features, just trees.

It's free access, which is the best bit honestly. Come outside peak summer if possible; August afternoons can get a bit close under all that canopy. Allow a couple of hours if you're taking it slow, or cut through in forty minutes if you just want to break up a park-based holiday.

Oaken Wood works as a convenient leg-stretch between The Hop Farm and your campsite, nothing more. It's not worth rearranging your itinerary for, but if you're in the area and fancy a walk that doesn't involve gift shops or car parks, you could do worse. Real woodland without the fuss.
