Oak Wood

Walking into Oak Wood near Cupar feels like stepping back into something properly ancient. The trees here are enormous - gnarled oaks that have been standing for centuries, their trunks thick enough that you'd need several people holding hands to wrap around them. It's the kind of place where the light filters through the canopy in these cathedral-like shafts, and you can actually hear yourself think.

This is woodland as it should be - no theme park nonsense, just good honest forest. There are paths winding through, though nothing that's been manicured to death. Families with older kids will do well here; younger ones might find it a bit samey after an hour or so, but walkers absolutely love it. The air smells right, damp and earthy, and you'll spot plenty of birds if you're quiet enough.

The nearest proper facilities are in Cupar, a short drive away, which makes Oak Wood the ideal escape if you're staying at Snugs at Logie Farm or Clayton Caravan Park nearby. It's free to access and worth allowing a couple of hours if you're not in a rush - more if you're the type to actually sit and watch wildlife rather than just march through.

Winter can be muddy, so go in wellies. Spring and autumn are lovely. Summer crowds it out a bit, though not terribly. This isn't a tourist trap, which is precisely why it's worth your time.
