Oak Hill

The walk up Oak Hill near Craven Arms is one of those routes that surprises you. It's not a massive peak - we're talking around 300 metres - but the views across Herefordshire and into Wales make it feel far more substantial than the height suggests. The summit itself is bare and windswept, which actually works in your favour because there's nothing blocking the horizon.

You'll want to allow a decent couple of hours for this one, especially if you're starting from the car park below and taking your time. The path climbs steadily rather than aggressively, which means families with older kids won't find it a slog, though very young walkers might struggle with the length. Bring proper boots - it can get boggy in places, and the ground near the top is rockier than you'd expect.

The real appeal here is that it doesn't feel crowded. Unlike some of the better-known Shropshire peaks, you'll likely have the place largely to yourself, particularly on weekdays. That peace is worth something. The views eastward towards the Clee Hills are genuinely good, and on clearer days you get a real sense of the landscape's scale.

If you're based at Rockbridge Park or Pearl Lake Country Holiday Park - both solid options with family facilities - Oak Hill makes for an excellent morning walk before heading back for lunch. It's the sort of place that works well as part of a wider walking itinerary rather than a standalone destination, but it absolutely earns its place on a Herefordshire walking holiday.
