Oak Bed

The woodland around Calne holds some proper old-growth character, and Oak Bed is where you'll find the thickest concentration of it. Walking through here, you're surrounded by mature oaks that have clearly been standing for centuries - the sort of trees that make you feel small. There's something grounding about being under that canopy, especially on a grey Wiltshire afternoon when the light filters through in pale green strands.

It's straightforward woodland walking, no visitor centre or marked trails as far as I could establish, so you're essentially exploring a forested area on foot. The appeal here is quiet and understated - there's no interpretation, no gift shop, no crowds. That's either brilliant or boring depending on what you're after. Families with young kids might find an hour's worth of interest before they start asking for ice cream; serious walkers and nature types will get far more from it.

Making it part of a longer walk around Calne works well - the surrounding countryside is pleasant rather than dramatic. If you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots, The Retreat or Roe Deer Fields are both solid choices and close enough that Oak Bed makes for a decent morning outing without eating into your whole day. Bring proper footwear because the ground can be damp and uneven. No facilities that I'm aware of, so sort yourself out in Calne before heading out. Early morning or late afternoon gives you the best light and the fewest fellow walkers.
