Nutty Mermaids

The River Lark winds through this Suffolk nature reserve like it's got somewhere important to be, and Nutty Mermaids sits right along its banks east of Bury Saint Edmunds. It's a proper working space - part wetland, part woodland - where locals come to spot kingfishers, water voles, and if you're lucky, the odd otter sliding through the shallows. The reserve manages itself according to wildlife needs rather than visitor convenience, which means paths can get boggy and sightings aren't guaranteed, but that's rather the point.

Walkers get the most from it. Bring binoculars and patience, and you'll see why people make the trip. It's not a manicured attraction with benches and explanatory boards - more a proper bit of working countryside that happens to be accessible. Allow two hours to potter about without rushing, though you can do a quick circuit in forty minutes if the weather turns. The nearest town is Bury Saint Edmunds, which gives you backup options if the reserve disappoints.

If you're staying at West Stow Pods or Kings Forest Caravan & Camping Park - both within spitting distance - this makes a morning outing before heading elsewhere. It pairs well with walking routes around the forest itself. Families with young kids might find it a bit slow-paced; teenagers obsessed with wildlife will think it's brilliant. Free access, as far as I can tell, though do check locally for any seasonal restrictions. Go early or late in the day when light's better and animals are moving.
