Ampton Water

The water spreads out flat and wide, reflecting whatever sky shows up on the day you visit - which in Suffolk often means grey clouds and the threat of a shower. Ampton Water sits east of Bury Saint Edmunds, a proper reservoir that's become a decent spot for walking, fishing, and just standing about watching the light change across the water. It's the sort of place locals know well but tourists often miss, which is part of its appeal.

The main draw is the walk around the perimeter. It's manageable for families with kids old enough to handle a few miles, though younger children might flag after an hour or so. Fishermen take it seriously here - you'll see them dotted along the banks with their rods and flasks. Birdwatchers come for the water birds, especially in winter when migrant species turn up. There's something calming about it, even when it's busy. No theme park nonsense, no queues, just water and sky.

If you're based at West Stow Pods or Kings Forest nearby, it's an easy morning or afternoon sortie. The walk itself is free, though you'll want to check locally about any fishing permits if that's your thing. Allow two to three hours for a full circuit at a leisurely pace, or an hour if you're just after a quick leg-stretch. Don't expect dramatic scenery - this is understated Suffolk. But if you like your holidays quiet and unpretentious, it's worth the drive from Bury Saint Edmunds.
