Norton Bog Lagoon

Norton Bog Lagoon sits on the edge of Rugeley like something forgotten by time. It's a shallow water body formed from old mining subsidence, and what could have been an eyesore has turned into proper wildlife habitat. The walk around it takes maybe forty minutes if you're dawdling, longer if you've brought binoculars.

The lagoon itself is fairly modest - don't expect a dramatic blue expanse. What you're coming for is the birds and the sense of discovering somewhere that most tourists miss. Dragonflies skim the surface in summer, and if you're lucky with timing, you'll spot herons working the shallows. Walkers and birdwatchers get the most from it; kids might manage twenty minutes before asking when they can get ice cream.

Access appears to be free and open, though facilities are minimal - no visitor centre or café, just the path and the water. Spring and early summer are best, when migration activity peaks and the reeds haven't yet become an impenetrable wall. Winter's quieter but colder, obviously.

If you're based at one of the camping parks nearby - Cannock Chase Camping is only 3.5 miles away, or Chase Glamping Pods if you want something less muddy - it's a decent addition to a morning's exploring. It won't be the highlight of your holiday, but it's the sort of local spot that locals actually use, without the crowds you'd find at the bigger attractions in the region. Worth a detour if the weather's decent.
