North Norfolk Railway - Holt Station

The platform at Holt Station carries that particular smell of heritage railways - oil, old wood, and anticipation. The North Norfolk Railway runs vintage trains between Holt and Sheringham, and stepping onto the station feels genuinely like you've walked backwards about seventy years. The buildings are proper period pieces, all brick and Victorian fussiness, and they've kept things authentic without veering into theme-park territory.

You board here for a scenic journey along the Norfolk coast through countryside that hasn't changed much since the line opened. It's a slow, gentle ride - no rushing. Families with young kids find it magical; train enthusiasts spend hours photographing the locomotives. Allow a full afternoon if you're doing the round trip to Sheringham. Tickets cost a fair bit, but it's not a quick tourist tick-off.

Timing matters. Summer weekends get rammed, and you'll queue for platform space. Weekday trips in May or September are far more pleasant. The station café is adequate rather than brilliant, so eat first in Holt itself.

If you're staying at Kelling Heath or North Norfolk Camping just up the road, this makes a solid rainy-day outing or a break from park life. It won't hold younger children's attention for eight hours, but as part of a broader Norfolk coastal trip alongside the beaches and local villages, it slots in nicely. The railway is genuinely run by volunteers who care about the thing, which you notice.
