Nine Acre Wood

A modest woodland walk outside Calne, Nine Acre Wood is exactly what it says on the tin - a small forest where you can stretch your legs without needing a map or serious hiking boots. The paths wind through mixed woodland, which is pleasant enough if you're staying nearby and fancy a break from the caravan or glamping pod.

It's not dramatic. There are no viewpoints, no ancient monuments, no cafes. What you get is a quiet walk under tree cover, good for letting the kids burn off energy or taking the dog out. Most people will spend thirty to forty minutes here before the novelty wears off, unless you've got very young children who get excited by sticks and mud.

Walkers using The Retreat Glamping or Roe Deer Fields as a base might find it convenient for a morning stroll, though you'd probably want to combine it with other things - Calne itself has a decent high street if the weather turns. Spring and early summer are the obvious times, when the woodland actually looks like something rather than bare branches.

Free admission almost certainly applies here, as with most British woodland, though you may need to park somewhere sensible and walk in. Given the distance from the glamping sites, it's useful rather than essential. If you're keen on woods, there are better ones within reach. If you just need somewhere green and quiet for an hour, this will do the job.
