Niffany Hill

The walk up Niffany Hill is a proper no-nonsense affair - steep in places, moorland underfoot, and the kind of climb that'll have your calves reminding you of it the next day. But that's exactly why it's worth the slog. This peak sits just outside Skipton in Lancashire, offering the sort of expansive views across the Dales that make you understand why people bother with the Yorkshire Uplands at all.

From the top, you're looking out over farmland, distant ridges, and on a clear day, genuine distance. It's not a dramatic summit - no dramatic rock formations or sudden drops - but walkers will find it rewarding precisely because it demands a bit of effort. Takes around two to three hours for a decent circuit depending on your fitness and how often you stop for breath. Most people tackle it as part of a longer moorland walk rather than a standalone trip.

Families with older kids who can handle a proper hill will get something out of it. Younger children might find the exposed moorland a bit bleak and the gradient tedious. It's free, obviously - it's a hill - and there's no formal visitor infrastructure. You park locally and just go.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Draughton Heights is closest at four miles - Niffany Hill makes a solid half or full day out. It pairs well with exploring Skipton itself or combining it with other walks in the area. The moorland can be boggy after rain, so pick your weather.
