Next Ness Nature Reserve

The path down to Next Ness curves through scrubby woodland before opening onto a vast expanse of mudflat and shingle - proper wild coastline, this. You're looking across Morecambe Bay towards the Lake District fells, and on a clear day the view stretches miles. The reserve itself is a working demonstration of coastal management, with planted native shrubs slowly binding the shingle ridges together. It's quieter than you'd expect given how close it is to Grange-over-Sands.

Birdwatchers will spend hours here. Waders, terns, the occasional passing seal - bring binoculars and a field guide. Families with older kids do well enough, though the walk isn't dramatic and there's nowhere to buy a coffee. Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're seriously into spotting things. Go when the tide's out for maximum mudflat exposure - high water and you're looking at brown water against brown shingle.

It works best as a morning outing alongside staying at Old Park Wood Caravan Holiday Park or Newby Bridge Country Caravan Park, both rated well and close enough for a short drive. The reserve costs nothing and doesn't require booking - just turn up. The appeal is genuinely modest though. If you're after dramatic Lakeland scenery or proper heritage attractions, Next Ness is really more of an add-on walk than a main event. But if you like wild edges and want to spot some birds, the effort pays off.
