Newtimber Hill

The walk up Newtimber Hill rewards you with proper Sussex Downs views - rolling fields and distant ridges that stretch toward the coast. It's a straightforward climb from the village side, and once you're up there, the whole landscape opens out. The summit isn't dramatic, but the perspective is. On a clear day you can see across to the weald and beyond, which makes the effort worthwhile.

This is walker territory, full stop. Families with small kids will find the approach a bit steep for the payoff, and it's not the sort of place to linger for hours. But if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Foot of the Downs or Downsview Park are both close by - it's an excellent morning or late-afternoon outing. The walk itself takes about forty minutes to an hour depending on fitness, and there's a decent path most of the way up.

Access is free and there are no facilities up top, so bring water. Go in spring or early autumn when the light is best and it's not roasting. Summer weekends can draw a few people, but it never gets rammed. The South Downs Way runs nearby, so you could link this into a longer route if you're after a proper trek. Henfield, just a couple of miles south, has pubs and cafes if you want food before or after. Honest spot, this - not Instagram-famous, just a solid bit of downland with genuine views.
