Newlyn Art Gallery

The gallery sits right in Newlyn village, a proper working fishing port where you can still smell the catch coming in. Walk past the boats and you'll find the Newlyn Art Gallery, a converted Victorian building that punches well above its weight for a place this size. Inside, the focus is on Cornish art - both historical pieces from the Newlyn School painters who made this village famous in the late 1800s, and contemporary work from local artists. The light in here is genuinely lovely, which makes sense given this was always an artists' colony.

Histories types will get the most from it, particularly if you care about the Pre-Raphaelite movement and how it played out in Cornwall. That said, the contemporary exhibitions shift regularly, so you might find anything from sculpture to photography. It's not massive - you can work through it in an hour or so without rushing, which is ideal if you're staying nearby. Free to wander around, no entrance fee, and there's a decent little café where you can actually sit without being rushed.

If you're based at Foxglove Field Glamping or Roselands just down the road, this makes a cracking rainy-day visit. Newlyn itself is worth the afternoon - the harbour's got proper character, the seafood restaurants are legitimately good, and you can grab lunch after the gallery. It's real Cornwall, not the sanitised version you get in St. Ives.
