Newborough Beach

The beach at Newborough stretches for miles along Anglesey's west coast, backed by proper sand dunes that shift with the wind. You get that rare Welsh combination here - decent sand, a lagoon that fills and empties with the tide, and views across to Snowdonia on a clear day. The dunes themselves are worth wandering through alone; they're part of a nature reserve, so don't expect a fairground atmosphere.

It's the sort of place walkers genuinely enjoy, and families with older kids won't get bored - there's space to kick a ball around without feeling hemmed in. Younger children might find the walk from the car park a bit much, depending on where you park. The beach works best at low tide when you get proper sand to work with; at high tide it's more shingle and less appealing.

Getting there from Benllech takes about twenty minutes by car. There's a car park at Newborough itself, though it fills on summer weekends. The village has a few local shops and cafes, nothing fancy. Free to access, obviously - it's a beach.

The dunes and beach walk combine well with exploring the quieter side of the island rather than fighting the crowds at the more famous spots.
