Llyn Rhos Ddu

Dark waters reflect the moody Anglesey sky at this small mountain lake tucked away from the tourist trail. Llyn Rhos Ddu translates as 'Black Moor Lake', and on a grey day you'll understand why - the peaty water looks almost inky against the surrounding moorland. Getting there requires a proper walk across rough ground, so come prepared with decent boots and waterproofs.

Walkers and photographers will get the most from this spot, particularly those after a bit of solitude away from Anglesey's busier coastal attractions. The lake sits in wild, open country where you might spot red kites circling overhead or catch sight of hardy Welsh mountain ponies grazing nearby. It's not a destination for families with small children - the terrain is unforgiving and there's nowhere to shelter if the weather turns.

Allow at least two hours for the round trip from wherever you park, longer if you want to properly explore the area or wait for decent light for photos. From Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, it's about a twenty-minute drive to reach the access points, making it a worthwhile day trip from any of the nearby holiday parks like Llanfair Hall or Coed Helen Holiday Park. Just don't expect facilities or marked paths - this is Anglesey at its most elemental.
