New Covert

Heading into New Covert near Newent feels like stepping into proper working woodland rather than a manicured nature reserve. It's a working forest managed by the Forestry Commission, so what you get is genuine - planted conifers mixed with broadleaf woodland, rides cut through for timber operations, and the kind of quiet that only happens when you're surrounded by trees.

Walkers will find the place most rewarding. The forest floor is soft underfoot, paths are well-defined, and there's enough space to disappear for a few hours without feeling crowded. On a grey Herefordshire afternoon, when the light filters through the canopy in that particular British way, it's genuinely atmospheric. Don't expect dramatic viewpoints or heritage sites - this is about the walk itself, the texture of the woodland, maybe spotting wildlife if you're lucky.

It's free to access, which is always a bonus, and you can easily spend two to three hours here depending on which routes you choose. Spring and autumn tend to work best - summer can feel oppressively muggy under the tree cover, and winter paths get properly boggy in places.

If you're based at either Haywood Farm or Yew Tree Farm just down the road, New Covert makes a solid half-day outing without the faffing around of driving somewhere proper. It won't set your pulse racing, but that's rather the point.
