Walking into Netherwood feels like stepping into the kind of Scottish woodland that actually makes you understand why people move up here. It's a proper forest - tall conifers mixed with broadleaf trees, the sort of place where the light comes down in strips and everything smells of damp earth and pine needles.

The forest sits just outside Dumfries, close enough for a half-day trip but far enough to feel properly away from it all. There are paths threading through, ranging from straightforward walks to more serious rambles depending on what you're after. It's exactly the kind of place where you can spend two hours and feel like you've been somewhere, or push on for a longer afternoon if the mood takes you.

Walkers will get the most from this - it's genuinely good for clearing your head, especially if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks like Marthrown of Mabie or Criffel View just outside Dumfries. Kids will enjoy it too, though younger ones might find some stretches a bit samey after a while. Bring proper shoes because the ground gets boggy in places, particularly after rain.

Best visited in autumn when the light's lower and more interesting, or early spring before the midges think about turning up. It won't blow your mind if you're expecting some kind of magical wonderland, but it's solid woodland walking with genuine atmosphere.
