Nether Largie Standing Stones

Four Bronze Age monoliths stand in a field just outside Lochgilphead, silent and utterly compelling. The Nether Largie Standing Stones are the sort of place that stops you mid-walk - not because they're flashy or easy to reach, but because they're genuinely ancient and genuinely mysterious. We're talking 3,500 years old, minimum. The tallest stone reaches nearly four metres, and they're arranged in a line that suggests something deliberate, something ritualistic, though archaeologists still aren't entirely certain what.

You can see them from the road, but actually walking right up to them changes everything. The scale hits differently when you're standing beside them. They're accessible year-round and free, which means you could visit at dawn if the mood takes you - and honestly, that's when they're best. The walk from the car park is short and straightforward, maybe ten minutes of easy terrain.

Historically minded people will want to spend time here, taking in the age and the sheer unknowability of it all. Kids tend to find them interesting for about half an hour unless you're good at making up stories. If you're staying at The Pod Over By just a couple of miles away, these stones make a proper excuse for a morning stroll - combine them with nearby Loch Gilp if you've got time.
