Needlelee Wood

The woodland around Needlelee, just a short drive from Keswick, gives you proper forest walking without the crowds you'll find on the popular fell routes. The nearest campsite is Keswick Camping and Caravanning Club, about three and a half miles away, so it's a quick jaunt from base if you're parked up there. Whinfell Hall Farm Campsite is also within reasonable distance if you want a quieter site.

There's nothing fancy here - no visitor centre, no café - which is rather the point. Free access, no booking required, just turn up and walk. It's the sort of place that works brilliantly for a morning or afternoon slot alongside other attractions round Keswick. Worth the detour if you want woodland without the Lake District fell-walking intensity.
