Neath Castle

The ruins of Neath Castle stand on a grassy mound just outside Swansea, overlooking what was once a strategically important river crossing. What remains is largely Norman stonework - crumbling grey walls and foundations that speak to the castle's medieval power, though frankly the whole thing feels quite compact once you're actually there.

It's a straightforward visit: walk around the remains, take in the views across the grounds, and that's about it. History buffs will get something out of reading the interpretive boards and mentally reconstructing what stood here in the 12th century. Families with young children might find it a bit underwhelming - there's no playground, no indoor exhibitions, just the bones of a castle. Walkers heading between Swansea and the countryside will pass it without much trouble, and it's free to access, which is always a bonus.

Allow 20 to 30 minutes, maybe longer if you're genuinely interested in the Norman period. Best visited on a clear day when you can actually see where you're going across the site. It works as a quick stop if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like SWDA Riverside, but it's not a destination on its own. Worth a look if you're already in the area exploring Swansea's older corners, but don't make a special trip just for this.
