Near Comb Hill

The walk up Comb Hill, just outside Harrogate, is a proper little climber that rewards you with views across the Yorkshire Dales. It's not a massive peak - nothing that will knacker you out - but the route itself is what makes it worthwhile. You're walking through proper moorland, and on a clear day you can see for miles.

This is one for walkers who want something with a bit of grit to it, without needing fell boots and a packed lunch. The ascent is steady rather than brutal, and the paths are generally well-maintained, though they can get boggy after rain. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip if you're taking it at a normal pace and stopping to catch your breath and admire the view.

The nearest town is Harrogate, which means you're well-positioned if you're basing yourself at one of the local glamping spots like Breaks Fold Farm (only a mile or so away) or Windmill Retreats. It's the sort of walk that fits nicely into a holiday where you want movement and fresh air without spending all day on the hill. Kids who are reasonably fit will manage it fine, though younger ones might need a hand on the steeper bits.

Go early if you can, particularly on weekends. The moors can get crowded with dog walkers, and half the charm is having a bit of space to yourself. There's no cafe at the top, so bring water. Free to access, naturally - it's moorland.
