Walking the perimeter takes about 45 minutes if you're thorough. The views across the Monnow Valley aren't dramatic, but they're pleasant enough - rolling green countryside that explains why someone decided to plant a castle here in the first place. Inside the walls, there's not much left beyond stonework and your own imagination, which is either brilliant or frustrating depending on your tolerance for ruins without interpretation boards.

Families with young children might find it a bit sparse - there's no visitor centre or playground, just open ground and old stone. Walkers and castle enthusiasts, though, will appreciate the location. It's a natural stop if you're exploring the Wye Valley or heading between Hereford and the Welsh border.

Staying at Trippenkennett Farm or Burhope Farm, both within four miles, gives you a solid base for combining this with walks along the Monnow Valley. Go on a dry day - the mound gets muddy, and there's no shelter once you're up there. Early morning or late afternoon suits the light better for photos.
