National Trust - Plas yn Rhiw

You drive through Pwllheli and then inland, climbing steadily until the coastal plain drops away behind you. Plas yn Rhiw sits on a hillside in Gwynedd with proper views across Cardigan Bay - the kind of outlook that makes you understand why someone built a manor house here in the first place.

It's a modest Welsh gentry house, not a stately pile. The National Trust owns it now, and what draws people is the building itself - a higgledy-piggledy thing that's been added to and altered since around 1600. Wandering through the rooms, you get a sense of how families actually lived rather than how they performed for visitors. The gardens are the real pull though: they're small, intimate, and the current holders have worked hard to restore them without making them look like a museum piece.

History types will find it rewarding. Walking families might manage an hour comfortably, less if the kids aren't into old houses. The climb from the car park is modest but steady - fine on a decent day, muddy when it's been raining.

If you're camping at Treheli Farm nearby, it's a proper detour rather than a main event. Same goes for Glampio Coed or the other spots a few miles south towards Tal-y-Fan. Worth combining with a walk on the Llyn Peninsula, which starts right here.
