The northern reaches of the New Forest Commons feel properly wild in a way the southern sections don't always manage. Most visitors come on foot or horseback, and you can easily spend two hours exploring without seeing another soul. The best approach is from Ringwood, just a few miles south - it's genuinely accessible but requires a bit of effort to find the proper entry points. This works brilliantly alongside the caravan parks dotted around the forest edge like Fernwood Glamping or Forest Edge Holiday Park. You're staying within reach of the Commons but also the forest's more developed attractions. Go in spring or autumn when the crowds thin out and the light's better. Summer weekends get rammed with day-trippers heading for the easier walks. Families with young children might find it frustrating - there's not much to *do* beyond walking - but serious walkers and anyone interested in conservation will find it genuinely moving. It costs nothing and takes what you give it.
