National Trust - Hill Top Beatrix Potter House

The farmhouse where Beatrix Potter actually lived sits on a hillside above High Wray, looking much as it did when she was writing about Peter Rabbit and Mrs Tiggy-Winkle. It's a working National Trust property, which means you're walking through rooms she furnished herself, with her own sketches on the walls and the kitchen where she tested recipes that ended up in her stories. The place feels genuinely lived-in rather than museum-sterile - there's a particular thrill seeing the actual desk where she wrote.

Potter was a serious businesswoman as well as an author, and the house tells that story alongside the children's books. You'll see her watercolours, her scientific illustrations (she was obsessed with fungi and ferns), and furniture she chose. The garden outside is worth an hour alone if you're into plants.
