National Trust - Helsby Hill

The sandstone ridge rising abruptly from the Cheshire plains announces itself long before you reach it. Helsby Hill is a proper workout - 180 metres of ascent that feels steeper than the numbers suggest, but the views across the flat farmland to the Welsh hills make every step count. On a clear day you're looking at Snowdonia in the distance, and on the climb up you'll pass the remains of an Iron Age fort, though "remains" is doing a lot of heavy lifting since most of it has weathered away.

It's a National Trust property without the fuss of a country house or visitor centre - just open access to the hill itself, which means free entry and no opening hours nonsense. The path is well-trodden and marked, taking roughly forty minutes to the summit depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath. In spring the woodland floor is carpeted with bluebells, which softens the blow of the climb.

Walkers will love this more than casual strollers - it's not a gentle ramble, and the summit is more functional viewpoint than picnic spot, though people do settle on the rocks with a flask. Kids capable of proper hiking will enjoy it; younger ones might grind to a halt halfway. The nearby holiday parks around Frodsham and Delamere Forest offer convenient bases for exploring the wider area, where you can combine this with walks through Delamere itself or strolls around Frodsham's own countryside. Worth the detour if you're in the northwest and fancy a proper hill without the drive north to the Lakes.
