Harmer's Wood

Ancient oak and beech trees tower above well-worn paths in this lovely patch of Cheshire woodland, just outside Frodsham. The forest feels properly wild in places - fallen logs create natural climbing frames for kids, while brambles and bracken give it that proper woodland atmosphere you don't always find in managed forests.

Families with young children will get the most from this spot. There's enough space for proper games of hide and seek, and the paths are gentle enough for little legs without being boring for adults. Dog walkers love it here too - plenty of interesting scents and space to let well-behaved dogs have a proper explore.

You'll want to allow at least an hour for a decent wander, though it's easy to spend a whole morning here if the weather's good. The woodland floor gets muddy after rain, so decent footwear is essential. Spring brings bluebells and fresh green leaves, while autumn turns it into a proper carpet of gold and russet.
