This National Trust property sits high above the Gwynedd valleys, a working hill farm that's been in the Trust's hands since the 1950s. You're looking at a proper traditional Welsh upland operation - the kind of place where sheep farming still matters and the landscape hasn't been prettified for tourists. The farmhouse and its surroundings give you a genuine feel for how people lived and worked in the mountains around Caernarfon, without the visitor centre theatre most National Trust spots now go in for.

Walkers will find it most rewarding. The approach itself is a decent hike through moorland, and once you're up there the views across Snowdonia are worth every step. History types appreciate seeing a working farm rather than a museum piece - the buildings tell you how hill farming functioned in a place where making a living was never easy. Families with older kids who can manage a walk will get something from it; younger ones might find it a bit sparse.

The surrounding area is camping country. Llyn Gwynant Campsite lies just 1.5 miles away, and Bryn Dinas Camping Pods even closer at 0.7 miles - both reasonable bases for exploring this corner of Snowdonia. Beddgelert Campsite at 3.4 miles works if you want a village nearby as well. Allow a couple of hours minimum, longer if you're serious about the walking. Best visited in settled weather when the views open up - drizzle just turns it into moorland trudging.
