The real draw is walking the riverbank and recognising the views - that bridge, those pollarded willows, the mill leat. It takes maybe an hour to properly absorb it, longer if you're the type to sketch or just sit about contemplating how light falls on water.

History buffs will get the most out of this. Kids might manage twenty minutes unless they're already painting-obsessed. It's free to wander the grounds and bridge, though the cottage interior access follows standard NT rules - check ahead for opening times before the drive from Colchester.

Pair it with a walk along the Stour Valley Path, grab lunch in Dedham village, and you've got a solid half-day. Worth the detour if you actually care about Constable.
