National Trust - East Soar

The clifftop walk down to East Soar is honestly the star of the show here. This National Trust-run coastal spot near Kingsbridge offers proper dramatic Devon coastline - tall sandstone cliffs dropping straight into the sea, with a small pebble beach tucked below that only appears when the tide's out. There's a working lime kiln down there too, a remnant from when they shipped limestone up the coast in the 1800s.

You'll want to allow a good hour for the walk and a proper poke around. It's not strenuous - just steep enough in places to test the quads on the way back up - and the path's well maintained. The real draw is the solitude. You won't find crowds here like you do at Thurlestone or some of the more famous South Devon spots. Families with older kids will manage it fine; small ones might find the return climb tedious.

Best visited out of peak season when the car park isn't rammed and you can actually hear the waves. Summer can feel overrun. The nearest pubs and supplies are back in Kingsbridge, so pack snacks if you're planning to linger.

If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks - Karrageen or South Devon Camping are both excellent - this is an easy morning or afternoon trip that works perfectly alongside a broader coastal walk. The National Trust manages it well, and there's no faffing about with admission fees. Just show up, enjoy the sea air, and remember the tide tables.
