National Trust - East Pool Mine

Two towering engine houses rise from the moorland near Redruth like industrial ghosts. East Pool Mine is what's left of Cornwall's tin and copper mining heritage - a pair of Cornish beam engines that once powered the pumps keeping water out of the shafts. The National Trust runs it, and you can actually walk inside the engine houses to see the massive machinery up close. It's genuinely impressive if you understand what you're looking at; if you don't, it's a bit of a shell.

Histories types and anyone curious about industrial archaeology will find it worthwhile. The structures themselves are striking - Victorian engineering at its most brutal and functional. Children might manage twenty minutes before asking when they can leave, unless they're the sort who get excited by pistons and gears. Allow an hour if you're going to read the interpretation boards and soak in the atmosphere.

Admission details aren't widely published online, which is typical Trust fashion - ring ahead or check the National Trust website when you book. It's free to look at from outside if you just want the photos, though the interior access is where the story actually lives. Spring or early autumn are best; summer gets crowded with coach tours, and winter's bleak even by Cornish standards.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Lanyon is closest at just over two miles - it makes a decent half-day trip alongside walks on the moorland. Pair it with a visit to the mining villages of the area for proper context. On its own, it's more of a checkpoint than a destination.
