Kresen Kernow

Kresen Kernow is Cornwall's archive and record office, housed in a modern building just outside Redruth. It's the sort of place that doesn't sound thrilling until you actually go, and then suddenly you're three hours deep in Victorian mining records or old parish documents.

The archive holds the county's documentary heritage - centuries of letters, maps, photographs, and official records that tell the story of Cornwall's past. You can browse collections relating to mining, fishing, agriculture, and local families. Some visitors come with specific research in mind (tracing ancestors, looking up old addresses), while others simply enjoy the detective work of flipping through historical documents.

It's genuinely free to visit and use the reading rooms, though you'll want to check opening hours and possibly book ahead for access to certain collections. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're seriously digging into something, though casual browsers might spend 45 minutes looking around. It's not a spectacle - there's no "wow" moment - but it's excellent if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks around Lanyon or Tresyjo and fancy a rainy-day activity that's actually worthwhile.

Families with kids aged ten and up who enjoy detective work will get something from it. For history enthusiasts or genealogy researchers, it's invaluable. Everyone else: lovely spot to understand how ordinary Cornish people lived, but honestly, only visit if you've got a genuine reason to dig into the archives. It pairs well with visits to Redruth's mining heritage sites if you're making a day of it.
