National Trust - Cemlyn

The shingle ridge at Cemlyn is one of those proper geological oddities that makes you stop and think. You're looking at a natural barrier that's managed to hold back a lagoon for centuries - it's the kind of thing that sounds dull until you actually see how dramatically it rises from the beach and realise how precarious the whole system is.

It's a National Trust site on the northwest tip of Anglesey, just outside Holyhead, and the main draw is the lagoon itself. Birdwatchers get genuinely excited here because it's a crucial spot for terns and other waders, especially during breeding season. The shingle spit creates a protected shallow water area that's basically an open invitation to nesting birds. It's free to visit and there's no charge, which is refreshing. The landscape is windswept and open - don't expect cosy woodland. Families with young kids might find it a bit bleak; teenagers who enjoy spotting unusual birds will get something real out of it.

Stay at one of the nearby campsites like Llain Ffynnon or Pengraig, both within walking distance, and you've got a solid base for exploring Anglesey's quieter corners. It's the kind of place that rewards patience and adds texture to a coastal holiday rather than delivering instant gratification.
