National Trust - Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd

The Long Mynd is one of those walks that rewards you properly - a long ridge of high moorland that dominates the landscape around Church Stretton, and Carding Mill Valley is where most visitors start. You get a gentle stream-side walk up through woodland before the terrain opens out onto proper hill country. It's National Trust land, so you know it's well-maintained without being over-managed.

The valley floor walk itself is about two miles there and back if you're not keen on climbing, and suits families with younger kids quite well - there's water to splash in, shade from the trees, and the gradient is easy. But the Long Mynd itself? That's proper fell-walking territory. The ridgeline stretches for miles, offering views across Shropshire that justify the huff and puff to get up there. On a clear day you're looking at three counties' worth of landscape.

This isn't a quick tick-box attraction. Give yourself a full afternoon minimum, longer if you're doing any serious walking. The stream in the valley is cold year-round, which is lovely in summer but means sensible footwear matters. Parking at the main car park fills quickly on weekends.

For a camping holiday in the area, you're perfectly placed - Small Batch Camp Site and Mountain Edge are both within three miles, and Church Stretton itself has several options. The walk pairs brilliantly with exploring the town's independent shops and cafes afterwards. It's the kind of place that separates the holiday-makers from the hikers, but both groups leave satisfied.
