National Trust - Attingham Park

The River Severn curves lazily through Attingham Park, and that's really the point of coming here. This National Trust property near Shrewsbury is fundamentally about the landscape - 250 acres of parkland that rolls downhill from an elegant Georgian mansion toward water meadows and woodland. You're not fighting crowds to see the house; people come for the walks.

The estate is proper walker territory. A circuit of the grounds takes a couple of hours at a relaxed pace, passing through tree-lined avenues, across open pasture, and down to the riverside. If you've got kids who can manage uneven terrain, they'll enjoy scrambling along the banks. Younger ones might find it all a bit samey after the first half-hour. The mansion itself is open seasonally, but the grounds are the real draw - there's something about the way the light hits the water and the way the deer ignore you completely that makes it feel less like a stately home visit and more like a proper country ramble.

It's free to park and walk the grounds, though there's a small fee for the house if you want to go inside. Allow three hours minimum to do it justice, longer if you stop for a picnic by the river. Spring and early autumn are cracking times - muddy in winter, baked in summer.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks within a couple of miles - Love2Stay or Ebury Hill are closest - Attingham makes an excellent half-day outing. It's the sort of place that doesn't demand much of you, which is exactly why it works.
