National Trust - Aberdulais

The old tin-plate works at Aberdulais sit right on the River Tawe, about five miles north of Swansea town centre, and what you're looking at is proper industrial heritage - the sort of place that made South Wales matter during the 19th century. The National Trust runs it now, which means the site is properly maintained rather than left to rot, and you can actually walk around the ruins and understand what went on here.

The waterfall is the real draw. It powers a working water wheel that's been restored, and honestly, it's lovely to watch the thing turn when there's decent flow. The falls themselves are nothing dramatic - you won't mistake them for Snowdonia - but they've got character, especially after rain. You can walk down to the riverside and get proper close to the water, which beats most heritage sites where you're kept at a distance.

History types will spend a good hour here reading the panels and picking through the industrial archaeology. Kids get bored after 30 minutes unless they're into Victorian machinery, which some are. Walkers should factor this into a longer Tawe Valley ramble rather than making it a standalone trip - there's more interesting walking to be had in the wider area.

It's a National Trust property, so check their website for current opening hours and admission. Riverside Holiday Park and SWDA Riverside are both within a short drive if you're basing yourselves in the area for a park break. Worth combining with a walk upstream or a visit to Swansea itself rather than treating it as a destination in its own right.
