Nap Hill

The walk up Nap Hill rewards you with one of the clearest views across the Lowlands you'll find without breaking your legs on something twice the height. It's a proper little peak, the sort of thing you can manage in a couple of hours from Moffat, which sits handily below. The climb itself is straightforward enough - no scrambling or technical bits, just good grass underfoot and a steady gradient that gets your heart working but won't leave you cursing your decision halfway up.

On a clear day the views are something else. You can trace the valleys rolling away toward England, see the sweep of moorland in every direction, and get a real sense of why people bother walking in this corner of Scotland at all. On a grey day, well, you'll mostly see cloud and regret.

This is walker territory rather than a destination for families with small kids or anyone after a quick Instagram moment. You need proper boots and a couple of hours minimum, plus the weather has to cooperate. But if you're staying at Howslack Farm caravan site or Riverside Holiday Park nearby, it's exactly the sort of walk that justifies the whole trip. The path is well-trodden and navigation's straightforward, so you don't need a map or a guide - just decent legs and dry weather. Go early in the day if you can. The light's better and you'll dodge any afternoon cloud coming in.
