Nanny Black Hill

The walk up Nanny Black Hill doesn't take long, but it's steep enough to make you work for the view. From Harrogate, it's an easy drive or a proper hike if you're keen, and once you've crested the top, you'll see why locals bother with it at all - the moorland rolls out in every direction, and on a clear day the Dales spread below like a map someone's left on a table.

It's the sort of place that rewards an early start. Get there before mid-morning and you'll have it mostly to yourself, just the wind and the occasional grouse. The summit itself is unremarkable - no café, no facilities, no crowds trying to take the same Instagram shot - which is rather the point. What you get is genuine quiet and genuine views without the fuss of more famous peaks.

If you're staying at Breaks Fold Farm Glamping or Windmill Retreats nearby, this makes a solid half-day outing. It's not a full day's expedition, more a punctuation mark on a longer walk through the surrounding hills. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find the climb tedious. Allow an hour and a half there and back, perhaps longer if you're stopping to look properly at the view.

The moorland can be boggy in places after rain, so decent boots matter. Winter visits are bracing rather than pleasant. Spring through autumn is your window.
