Mynydd Y Gyrt

The walk up Mynydd y Gyrt from Abergele is proper straightforward - nothing too technical, just a steady climb through bracken and rough moorland until you're standing at 610 metres looking out over the North Wales coast. On a clear day you can see right across to the Irish Sea, which is why locals reckon it's worth the afternoon effort.

It's not a dramatic peak by Welsh standards. No knife edges, no scrambles, just open moorland with decent views that reward you for the leg work. Most people knock it out in two to three hours return, which makes it ideal for families with older kids or anyone staying at the nearby caravan parks - Plas Farm is only five miles away and perfect for a base if you want several walks in the area.

Walkers will find it more rewarding than casual tourists. The paths can be boggy after rain and navigation isn't always obvious, so bring OS map knowledge or a decent GPS. Summer's your best bet, though even then the wind can bite at the top.

Historically it's not particularly remarkable - more a local training ground than a destination with stories to tell. But if you're staying in the Abergele area and need a proper walk without spending half the day on transport, this delivers. It's the sort of mountain where the pleasure is in the doing rather than the destination.
