Mynydd Gellionnen

The walk up Mynydd Gellionnen rewards you with proper views across Swansea and the surrounding valleys - the sort of vantage point that makes the effort worthwhile on a clear day. It's not a dramatic peak by any stretch, but that's rather the point. You get the hill-walking experience without the brutal scrambling or exposure that puts people off.

The climb itself takes around 45 minutes from the base, depending on your pace and which route you take. It's steep in places but nothing technical. On the way up you'll pass through moorland that shifts with the seasons - golden in late summer, bleak and windswept come winter. The peak itself is more functional than scenic in structure, but the panorama makes up for it entirely.

Walkers will find this genuinely satisfying, particularly those based at Riverside Holiday Park or SWDA Riverside just 3.9 miles away towards Swansea. Families with younger legs might find it a touch demanding, but teenagers who aren't afraid of a proper walk will get something real from it. History types won't find much to latch onto here - this is pure landscape rather than heritage.

Go early if you can, especially on weekends. The moorland can get boggy after rain, so decent boots matter. Allow two to three hours if you're stopping to take in the views properly rather than just bagging the summit. Free, obviously - it's a mountain. Conditions matter far more than the season when you're planning a visit.
