Mutley Meadows

A proper stretch of countryside wedged between Maidstone's sprawl and the quieter bits of Kent. Mutley Meadows is the kind of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - grassland with footpaths that meander through without much fuss or fanfare. There's nothing flashy about it, which is rather the point. The meadow itself is open enough to walk through comfortably, with decent views across the surrounding landscape if you pick a clear day.

It works best for walkers after some straightforward, uncomplicated terrain. Kids will get a decent run around here without needing to be entertained by cafes or visitor facilities - bring a picnic if you're stopping longer than twenty minutes. History types won't find much; this is working countryside rather than heritage site. The main appeal is simply that it exists as green space so close to a town that's mostly filled with retail parks and housing.

Since parking details and opening hours aren't straightforward, ring ahead before you go. Worth combining with the Bearsted Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite five miles away if you're based there for a few days - it's a proper alternative to sitting around the caravan in the afternoon. Don't expect drama or photo opportunities that'll blow up your Instagram. This is honest Kent countryside, useful more than spectacular.
