The Museum of the Manchester Regiment documents two centuries of soldiering, from the Napoleonic Wars through to modern operations, with uniforms, weapons, and personal kit that actually tell you something about the lives of the men who wore them.

It's the sort of place where you'll spend longer than anticipated if you're into military history or have a family member with regimental connections. Kids under ten might lose interest after forty minutes, but teenagers studying the period wars will find plenty to chew on. The collection avoids being dry - there are letters, photographs, and objects that humanise what's often taught as abstract dates and battles.

Admission appears to be free, which is generous. Allow an hour minimum, longer if regimental history is your thing. The museum sits just outside Greenfield, making it a logical stop if you're exploring the moorland walks nearby or staying at Dovestone Holiday Park, five miles away.

Go on a quieter weekday morning if you can. The space works best when you're not fighting crowds, and staff tend to have time for proper conversations about the exhibits. It's worth the detour if you're interested in Lancashire's military heritage, though it won't hold your attention if military museums generally bore you.
