Mumbles Lighthouse

The lighthouse sits at the end of the Mumbles promontory like a stubby white finger pointing out to sea. It's not huge - far from it - but that's rather the appeal. Built in 1794, it's one of the oldest in Wales, and you can walk right up to it along the rocky peninsula from Swansea's seafront.

The thing about Mumbles is the setting matters more than the structure itself. The walk out takes twenty minutes or so, winding past rock pools, the old lifeboat station, and a pier that's seen better days. On a clear day you get proper views across Swansea Bay towards the Gower Peninsula. Windy days are frequent here - bring a jacket that actually works.

It appeals most to coastal walkers and anyone after a straightforward seaside stroll with a destination. Kids will find the rocks and pools more entertaining than the lighthouse tower itself, to be honest. The structure isn't open to the public, so you're really here for the atmosphere and the walk rather than climbing anything.

Free to access, takes two hours round trip with a wander. Go midweek in summer if you want it quieter - weekends draw families down from Swansea proper. If you're based at Swansea Marina Tourer Park, it's a short drive or a very long walk into town, then out to the headland. Worth the trip if you're already in the area, though don't expect to spend more than an hour at the lighthouse itself.
