Muir of Ord Free Church of Scotland

The Free Church of Scotland in Muir of Ord is one of those places you'd miss entirely if you weren't looking for it - a modest stone building that says more about Scottish faith and architecture than any grand cathedral could. It's a working church, not a museum piece, which means you're stepping into something genuine rather than preserved.

What draws people here is the building itself. The architecture is distinctly Scottish Presbyterian - austere, purposeful, no frills. The interior has that characteristic stripped-back quality you find in Free Churches across the Highlands: plain wooden pews, whitewashed walls, simple windows. It's a proper working space for worship, not a tourist attraction pretending to be one.

Historically minded visitors will find it interesting, though there's no visitor centre or interpretation boards. You're relying on what you can see and perhaps a chat with locals in nearby Beauly. The church matters to the community here - it's still very much active.

Since opening hours aren't widely advertised, your best bet is calling ahead or checking in Beauly (just 3 miles south), where you'll also find Beauly Holiday Park. If you're based at Dingwall Camping and Caravanning Club Site, it's a 20-minute drive north. Neither location is ideal as a dedicated detour - it works better as part of a broader drive through the Black Isle and northern Highlands. Allow perhaps 15-20 minutes to look around if you can get in.

Go if you're genuinely interested in Scottish religious architecture. Skip it if you're after something with visitor facilities or a longer engagement.
